New Year

Well the Christmas holidays have come and gone in the blink of an eye. Or I could say in the flare of a flame… or in a flash. I think the word “flash” is the correct word to use here in Cape Town. It is scorching! It has been for weeks now.

My daughter loved the Christmas summer holidays. Very different from our Christmas holidays in England. Surfing and horse-riding and swimming and doing all the things kids like to do in their holidays…. But now it’s back to school, and as I mentioned previously… it is scorching. Blistering. Ice-cream-melting-in-seconds hot. You walk outside and it is as if you are walking into a fiery wall of heat. Temperatures have been over 30 degrees.

The orange sun blazes and sears the once green fields. Hills, once golden brown, now look like over-baked loaves burning in the sun. The sea dazzles. The wind howls. Today it slumbers, a slight sizzling breeze rippling palm trees, a warning, perhaps, of raging gales later. Plumes of smoke from unruly fires litter the hazy sky. This weather is dangerous. Water is scarce. Its weeks since it last rained and there are now water restrictions. Once green lawns slowly sink into the earth and become parched pockets of brown grass. Unless you have borehole water, then you can occasionally water the garden and watch the plants greedily suck up the liquid. Birds too, fly down onto the grass and fluff their wings in the drizzle.

Heat like this frays tempers. People get irritated and sweaty. Attempting to work in an office with no air-conditioning is almost impossible. It’s difficult to concentrate on important things. Panic sets in. Time runs away… chores get shoved to one side, sometimes vital things get buried under the burden of just… trying… to manage… Or so said one of our new clients who phoned us in a panic, needing assistance with administrative work. He was completely stressed. Things started to get out of control. No worries we said, Virtual Concierge Services are here to help. He compared us to a welcome glass of ice-cool water after a long stressful run in blazing heat.
